STUDIO TAIYI

INFO

I’m Taiyi Yu, a designer currently based in The Netherlands. With a profound interest in fostering connections and exploring relationships, I like to adopt an improvisational and hands-on approach in my research and design practice. By crafting real-world stuff, I seek to bridge diverse perspectives and unfold engaging narratives through the playfulness and flexibility of design.

Always open to cool collaborations and new friends – so feel free to hit me up or haunt me on the street anytime!

W.I.P.: Windmill In Play

W.I.P.: Windmill In Play is an installation featuring a deconstructed windmill and a video of how it was put together. The object utilises winds to help collect and transport sand from one point to another point, moving in a looped motion that gradually shapes the ground, leaving behind a visual imprint of the wind's power. The project questions how winds have been harvested through windmills and reflects on how we perceive and appropriate winds. The windmill, as a concrete example but also as a metaphor for modern industrialisation, is implicated in the dichotomy between humans and nature. It exemplifies the rationality of seeing the natural world as a resource, a power that reconstitutes experience through its mechanical structure. In playing with the composition and function of the windmill, I contemplate how we can cultivate a different relationship with winds through the integration of personal narratives and ways of sensing.

Invisible Visibles

How do you perceive a land?

This project aims to explore how we perceive and use land. Rather than just analyzing from a distance, I engage with the land through physical activity such as walking, observing, gathering, talking, and creating. Using an abandoned plot in Den Haag, I intervene in the transitory state of wasted materials by using locally sourced materials and limited resources on site to create a series of street objects. These objects, such as chairs and dog fences, encourage interaction and invite dialogues about the often-invisible material movements during urban development and the rapid transformations that occur. Through this project, I aim to raise awareness of a much deeper understanding of the land and our relationship with it.

Concreteli

"What if bamboo was once a part of concrete construction? "

Techniques are associated with materials rather than people because materials do "something". Concrete, as a means of construction, can be more accurately described as a process than as a material. With the project, the material experiment illustrates possibilities while concrete presents its attributes when it met with bamboo in ancient times. What would buildings have looked like by that time? Can concrete only be a rigid and smooth material? Three objects each represent a different part of a building, in order to envision alternative ways of construction and the landscape it brings along.

Forms Follow Flows

"Forms Follow Flows" is a concept that aims to explore the relationship between human beings and objects in urban spaces. The project proposes the creation of a series of street objects that challenge the traditional design of urban objects and their interaction with people. With the interactive attribute of the material and configurations, these objects would adapt and respond to the flow of people in public spaces, creating a dynamic and interactive environment. This project questions the way we perceive and interact with the materiality of objects, encouraging a more playful and engaged attitude toward the urban environment. It seeks to foster a more intimate relationship between humans and the environment which used to be "fixed"
